The source and wellspring of all inspiration, the Muses take their root in Greek mythology, depicted as nine water nymphs who serve as aids to all artists, authors, and creators. The Greek word mousa itself is derived from the root men or mind, referencing the Muses route to their chosen persons creativity: often through mental images, thoughts, or dreams. Traditionally, the nine Muses are named as follows: Calliope (epic poetry), Euterpe (music), Clio (history), Erato (love poetry), Melpomene (tragedy), Polyhymnia (sacred poetry), Terpsichore (dancing), Thalia (comedy), and Urania (astronomy).
On the front of the pendant, Calliope the Fair Voiced and eldest Muse, holds a writing tablet in hand. The Muse of epic poetry, she is crowned in gold and sprouts wings from her back to lift the pens of mortals into immortality.
